I only enable the valve open monitoring in my install as there is nothing that I have that is sensitive to missing irrigation cycles that could not be fixed when I notice they seem thirsty.

When using the Sonoff 4CH Pro as the valve controller one gets the protection of both valve open too long and too long of a period since an irrigation cycle has run.
The downside of something like mcsSprinklers as a Homeseer plugin is that you are depending upon HS being alive and well. For commercial this is usually not a good option. For home use one can view the irrigation controller like a TV or smartphone that will be replaced periodically. Installing them in conditioned environment vs. They are functionally very appealing, but how long will they last. The new wave of smart controllers do not have this proven reliability and are built with consumer-grade electronic components. The traditional irrigation controllers that you but at big box stores use very simple components that have been field proven for many years. This requires that there be a water meter for the irrigation water supply.
It is also possible, such as can be done with mcsSprinklers, to monitor the actual water use so when a leak occurs or when a valve is stuck open there is notification provided. It does not protect from mechanical reasons such as a pebble holding the valve open. With a HS virtual device this monitoring is not possible and the commanded position is the assumed position of the valve. Most irrigation relays provide status of being open or closed. This prevents a valve from being stuck open due to electrical reasons. What distinguishes an irrigation relay from a generic relay is that their is an independent controller monitoring that the relay does not stay activated for too long. I do not think I ever ran the RPi GPIO in the Homeseer configuration, but there are no limits that should prevent it. I think I also did it for the Odroid that has a few more GPIO. It does both the early RPi with limited GPIO as well as the newer ones that have more. It also directly controls RPi relays that are connected to its GPIO pins.
